Guided Meditation and Sitting Instructions
The instructions for meditation are pretty straightforward - the recommendation is to sit comfortably, on the floor or in a chair, with an upright but not stiff back and a relaxed and loose body. You should sit quietly and breathe naturally, and with your consciousness, you should do only one thing - know that you are breathing. Know that you are taking in air and knowing that you are exhaling air—only that.
Whenever you notice that you have been wandering in thoughts and your attention is no longer on the breath, you can label your thought as 'thought' and return to paying attention to the breath. That's all.
However, most of us find the matter complex and sometimes tedious. As the French Philosopher Blaise Pascal suggested, we have a serious difficulty sitting alone in a room by ourselves.
In their great compassion and wisdom, wonderful teachers like Sogyal Rinpoche, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, Sharon Salzberg, and many other outstanding meditation teachers offer us their help through meditation instructions and guided meditations.
