Using Incense in Meditation Practice

The scent emanates from flowers, plants, and other substances that are specially gathered and concentrated in authentic incense can be very helpful. Moreover, the scent can be used as an anchor for your meditation as you place your attention lightly on your sense of smell.

One can also consider burning incense as an offering to whoever embodies the ultimate truth for you as you seek help and support in your endeavor to meditate. For Buddhists, this could be the Buddha, Tara, or one of their innumerous emanations. For Christians, it might be Jesus or Mary. For Jews, it could be God or Moses. However, ultimately, they represent nothing other than the nature of our own mind, which is our true nature.
When using incense in meditation, do it mindfully. Be aware of when the effect is too strong, leading to a spaced-out or sleepy experience. If this happens, Simply remove the incense from the room or place it next to an open window. Enjoy the thought of others - family or neighbors - benefiting from your kind offering.
